ReThinking Foreign Policy is among over 40 organizations–including MPower Change, the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, Jewish Voice for Peace, American Muslims for Palestine, IfNotNow and many more– that have come together to endorse and promote the #NoTechForApartheid Campaign. The campaign is supporting workers at Google and Amazon who have called on their companies to terminate their work on Project Nimbus, a cloud-based technology that will provide, according to the Jerusalem Post’s overly benign description, “a comprehensive, in-depth cloud services solution for the government, the national defense system, and other bodies in the Israeli economy.” 
Gabriel Schubiner, a software engineer and researcher at Google and Bathool Syed, a content strategist at Amazon write that, “Under these contracts, our cloud services would help facilitate the Israeli military’s control and persecution of Palestinians, demolition of Palestinian homes in the occupied Palestinian territories and attacks on Gaza that have hit civilian targets such as hospitals. In addition to the military, Project Nimbus will also provide our cloud services to the Israel Land Authority, an agency that enables Israel’s continued expansion of segregated settlements in violation of international law and U.S. policy.”
By providing this technology, these tech giants are further enabling Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people–from surveilling and collecting data on Palestinians, to facilitating apartheid and illegal settlement expansion.
We’re heeding the call from hundreds of Google and Amazon workers who oppose this contract to rise up against Project Nimbus.
Our message is clear: Google and Amazon should do the right thing and stop doing business with Israel’s apartheid government. Technology should be used to bring people together, not enable ethnic cleansing.
