My latest piece for Responsible Statecraft explores the recent half-hearted attempt by the Joe Biden administration to re-open the US consulate in Jerusalem that had served as a headquarters for diplomatic contacts with the Palestinian Authority until Donald Trump absorbed it into the US embassy when he moved that office to Jerusalem.

I argue that the reopening of the consulate was never as easy as many imagined or as Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken implied, but that they also never made a serious effort to confront Israel’s rejection of the move. Check it out here.
