ReThinking Foreign Policy joined nineteen other prominent advocacy groups in a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressing support for the Biden administration’s vital efforts to restore the JCPOA.
Recent efforts from congressional hawks, including some prominent Democrats like Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Bob Menendez and Maryland conservative Democrat Ben Cardin working alongside most of the Republican caucus in the Senate have created more pressure on the Biden administration to back away from, or put unrealistic conditions on negotiations to restore the nuclear deal that was working just as intended until the United States under Donald Trump tore it up with no provocation.
The subsequent strategy of “maximum pressure” to force Iran into a new, less favorable deal has failed spectacularly. It has led to increased conflict in the Gulf region, to Iran being irreversibly much closer to the capability of producing a nuclear weapon (although there remains no indication they will do so, as U.S. and Israeli intelligence have assessed for many years), and devastated Iran’s civilians to no purpose.
