Over the weekend, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote a column that needs to be circulated to every office in Congress. In it, citing ex-U.S. government officials, including two former ambassadors to Israel, Kristof proposed that the US stop its annual aid package to Israel. Not condition the aid, but stop it, fully, albeit gradually.
There are a number of flaws in his reasoning to get there, but the fact that this was in the Times, that it came from Kristof, and that it was backed by former Ambassadors Dan Kurtzer and Martin Indyk, as well as former long time diplomat Aaron David Miller and J Street President Jeremy Ben Ami speaks volumes about where Israel stands these days among long time liberal Zionist figures. This piece at Mondoweiss examines all of this.
