The prospects of a renewed agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the draconian sanctions the United States have imposed on the Iranian people have recently gone from almost zero to very promising and now, back to being on very shaky ground.

There is one reason for all this fluctuation regarding a deal whose revival is in everyone’s interest, which was working very well, and which has only been jeopardized by an unthinkably reckless and murderous unilateral decision by the United States. That reason is that there are those who don’t really care about the deal, they just want to see a war of regime change waged against Iran. Those forces include the government of Israel (even Saudi Arabia and the UAE have backed off), and their supporters here, such as the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and AIPAC.

Their arguments are blatantly deceptive, but most people don’t follow the issue closely enough to know that. To address that, I’ve written a rejoinder to a recent piece of AIPAC pro-war propaganda. You can check it out at Mondoweiss.
